A Room For Our Baby Boy
For our 4th little one’s room, I imagined a calming space where we could relax with the baby and not worry about clutter, vibrant patterns or elaborate decor. Eventually, we decided to design the room with some coastal elements to play into my love of blue, white, and the beach.
We had a few furniture items from our previous children that we planned on reusing to save some money. These were the dresser, crib, and glider. To update those older pieces, I purchased a new slipcover for the glider, crib rail covers (to cover up all of the teeth marks 🤪), and new drawer pulls for the dresser.
Accessories
The accessories that first helped set the tone for the room were the rattan mirror and sailboat painting that I found at Home Goods when I was only a few months pregnant. Those two items sat in this room alone for a few months before we decided on anything else.
Some of my other favorite accessories are the La Jolla baskets from Serena & Lily and the blue and white ottoman from Target. The changing basket and pad are from The Tot & I was really impressed with the quality. They are all linked at the bottom of the post. I do not have an exact match for a few of the things purchased from Home Goods but I have linked items that will give you a similar look.
The fan is one of the few that I wrote about in my blog post about ceiling fans that aren’t ugly. If you’re looking for a new ceiling fan, head here to read about my favorites! This one has a remote that can control the light and the fan speed which makes it easy to adjust from the glider when nursing the baby or getting him ready for bed.
Trim
This room originally had board and batten trim in it but as we decorated other rooms, we found that more rustic style of trim looked out of place among the rest of the rooms in our house. We decided to rip that trim off and install this more traditional trim. That project was a total nightmare but thankfully I am happy with the finished look.
If you want to see more of that process and how we built this trim, head to the blog post here.
Paint
We went back and forth on paint colors for a while. I was torn between a light blue/green paint color or going darker with a deeper navy. Ultimately, we settled on the lighter color to keep the room calm but playful for as our son grows.
The final color we chose is Glass Slipper by Benjamin Moore. Depending on the light, it can read as either blue or green but I finds it is a touch more blue than how the color appears online or on the swatch.
Crib Rail Covers
I just have to point out the adorable crib rail covers for a quick second. This crib had been through the ringer with a few of my kids and my nieces and it was covered in teeth marks. Since my husband said I couldn’t purchase a new crib for our last baby, I went searching for the best way to cover the damage. I was hoping to avoid having to sand and repaint the entire thing.
I found the option of crib rail covers on Etsy and loved the look of this stitched fabric. The seller I went through on Etsy was delightful and went out of her way to help match the color of the crib sheet exactly for the light blue ties. Her shop name on Etsy is Cane River Creations & she comes highly recommended.
Overall, we are happy with how his nursery turned out. It is definitely the most calming room in the house and we have already started creating memories in this space with John Reid and his big brother and sisters. He isn’t sleeping in here just yet but our fingers are crossed that he will find it as peaceful as we do (especially during those night hours ?).
Also, shoutout to Lindsey Martin Photography for the photos of me and the kids in this space. You can find her website here.
