I want that

This post has been a long time coming. We had all of the plans for the room and ordered supplies in early November but it took until late January for everything to arrive. There is still some work to do but I needed something to show you, so here is a peek!

Berkley was such a champ through the challenges that 2020 brought and we are so proud of her. We wanted to do something special for her and when she mentioned updating her room, I was obviously on board. It took a little convincing for daddy but mom is always down for a room refresh!

Our first inspiration came from the Citron Vert Wallpaper from Caitlin Wilson. I have been dying for an excuse to use this wallpaper in our house. Jake and I have never hung wallpaper on our own before so we decided to start with just applying it above some trim, instead of an entire wall.

Wallpaper

I know so many people were holding their breath when we said we were going to try and hang this expensive wallpaper on our own. I will admit Jake and I put it off for a couple weeks too, wondering if we were going to be able to handle it. Luckily, this pre-pasted wallpaper application was actually a lot easier than we expected. The hardest part was the corners and getting the paste to hold so you can cut straight lines at the top, bottom, and side when in a corner. The straight pieces were a breeze! The only other part that made us nervous was the pattern repeat. We tried to design the trim so that we wouldn’t waste too much paper but that was unavoidable. I now understand why my last wallpaper installer had me order 8 rolls of wallpaper for one tiny little bathroom – the pattern wastes so much!

All in all though, it really wasn’t bad once we got started. I am thankful that we decided to do a partial wall on our first try instead of an entire room though. A whole wall would have taken at least 2 rolls (maybe 3) and the wallpaper was a bit of a splurge to begin with. I can’t even imagine how many we would have needed for all of the walls.

Trim

We settled on some more traditional trim in this room to match the style of the wallpaper. We had discussed board and batten like we did in the twins’ room but ultimately decided this space needed to be a little more traditional.

I know so many of you have asked for an in-depth tutorial of how easy this trim is to install. I promise we will do one! (Life just keeps getting in the way ?) We are planning on installing picture moulding in our master bedroom on every wall. I think that will be the perfect time to show you how to measure the space, buy the wood, and determine all of the tools you need. In the meantime, if you are installing something similar soon, send me a message and I am happy to help!

Paint Colors

The paint color we selected is Benjamin Moore Dusty Blue at 50%. Dusty Blue was a pretty color but just a bit too dark for her small room. I was nervous to go 50% because I really didn’t want the walls to look baby blue. Luckily, it turned out really well and is a good cross between blue and light purple.

The refinished dresser is painted in Benjamin Moore Newburyport Blue. The handles were original to the dresser but were painted with gold spray paint from Target. (Rust-Oleum 11oz Imagine Metallic Spray Paint Gold)

Furniture

All of the furniture in the room was repurposed from other items or things that we bought on Facebook marketplace. The headboard was created from an extra piece of wood we had in the garage. Berkley picked out the pink and white fabric at Hobby Lobby and we wrapped the wood in foam, batting, and the fabric.

Her nightstand is a Pottery Barn end table from our last house. It had been sitting and collecting dust on our third floor so we decided to paint it white. It’s not perfect but it was free and is going in a 6 year olds bedroom so I can’t really complain. The polyurethane gave it a slight yellow tint so we will eventually sand that down and touch it up again to finish it.

The dresser was a Facebook Marketplace find. It was originally an off-white color but had a bunch of dings and scratches so we decided to make it a darker accent piece. We used Benjamin Moore Newburyport Blue that we had left over from a previous project and just sprayed painted the white knobs with a Metallic gold paint.

Bedding

The majority of Berkley’s bedding came from Amazon. She originally had a beautiful linen twin size duvet from Pottery Barn but I couldn’t bring myself to spend another $200 on a duvet just yet. The insert was also from Amazon and I love that the duvet has a zipper which makes for much easier washing. The blue and white speckled pillows are from fabric Berkley picked out at Hobby Lobby. My darling mother volunteered to make those for her to help us save some money and the floral pillow is from Caitlin Wilson Designs.

Accessories

We are still waiting for some artwork for her walls but we have a few little things to accessorize so far like a mirror, curtains, and bedside lamp. The deep navy lamp is from Target’s Jonathan Y collection and is one of my favorites. We have really a really similar style in white on our nightstands in our bedroom. The blackout curtains, curtain rod, and mirror all came from Target too and are linked below.

If you have any questions about anything in the room that I forgot to cover, let me know! Now that we know we can tackle wallpaper we are thinking about applying some in the kids bathroom when we go to renovate that space. We have plans to tackle the kitchen first and possibly a mudroom but I will share a picture of the wallpaper we like for the bathroom below to give you an idea for when that project gets closer. ?
